This is not my official Peace Corps blog! [Jan. 29th, 2007|02:33 pm]
Hey everyone, somehow, this journal ended up on Peacecorpsjournals.com, but this is not my Peace Corps Uganda journal. I have yet to set it up. If anyone knows how I can get this off that site and then put up my new one, let me know. Thanks!

I shot a bunch of guns today, it was awesome. I'm not turning into a Republican or anything, but it's good to take part in cultures that you are unfamiliar with. Especially if you have an opinion about that culture. It was a fun time even though I didn't see any elk...

Going to Uganda! [Jan. 12th, 2007|05:25 pm]
Anyone who still reads this should know that I finally got word from the Peace Corps and they're sending me to Uganda leaving March 2nd! I'm going to be a rural health worker. I haven't gone through all my info yet(lots of words, words are hard!). Anyways I'm pumped yet momentarily overwhelmed by the speed of how everything has progressed in the last week. Packing is a whole 'nother thing! More later,

I love not being wrong! [Nov. 14th, 2006|11:12 pm]

[music |walking on sunshine]

So a few entries back I vented about the guy who hit my car. Well all is good because yesterday I got what was coming to me; a fat check! The insurance company determined that it was his fault and should compensate for the damage to my car. Since my car is not that valuable, they didn't give me the full amount for the damage because then they would have to total my car. However, after bluebooking the value of my car in "Good" condition, it would be less then the check I got. So....SNAP! When I eventually sell my car, I'll almost get back what I paid for it counting the settlement check. Not bad for a car that I'll have put about 75k miles on and several dents. That makes me happy. The end...

PS- I am NOT getting my car fixed!

Grandma's 80th birthday party [Oct. 30th, 2006|11:14 am]
So my Grandma turned 80 and we had a party for her yesterday. Everything went good and it was a nice PC family function...until the family photo!

So I had my friends Mike and Josh come and help out ot the party; bus tables, fill up drinks, etc. Since my family is Norwegian, we had a viking theme. Since Mike has a kilt and that is not viking at all but still cool, I had him wear it. When it was time for the group picture, we volunteered Mike to use everyone's camera and take pictures. There were about 60 of us so Mike had to step up on a chair to get us all. As we were all standing there, one of my relatives, a 40-something sassy lady said to my dad: "Is he wearing anything under that kilt?" My dad says "I don't know" to which her sister who was also sassy says "on a good day, lipstick!" Just as she says that, my Aunt Tina goes up behind Mike and lifts up his kilt, exposes his junk to my ENTIRE family! Just about the funniest thing I've every seen...and no, no old people had heart attacks. Everybody was amused.

And on another note, Josh told this little kid that "he had a big knife and he better get away from him". My friends kick ass!

Moving on up [Oct. 18th, 2006|02:27 pm]

[mood | bored]
[music |walking on sunshine]

So anyone who has ever been in my bedroom (no jokes, this is serious!) knows that I have this lamp that does not work properly. The wiring is all screwed up and you have to fiddle with it to keep the light on. So I posted about my stubborness regarding this lamp about a year ago and pondered why I didn't just go get a new lamp. I've fixed other things that were broken, but for some reason, I didn't want to let the lamp win. Folks, about a week ago was a big day for me because...(gasp!)...I let the lamp win! I went to Target and bought a new lamp. Of course the fact that you have to buy the stand seperately from the shade and the ones I got don't fit together is a totally different post...wow, it's a slow day today! PEACE

So I just got in a car accident. I AM PISSED! I'm ok, but I am PISSED! It's HIS fault and I had the right away. It's not my fault you got a rent a car and failed to buy the insurance. ....Sigh....sigh.....if I have to pay out the ass I am not going to be in good financial shape...or a happy camper. YOU WERE MERGING, I HAD THE RIGHT OF WAY!!! Ok, done. Let the Insurance Companies hash it out.

Mission: Don't kill nephew! [Sep. 25th, 2006|12:58 pm]
[mood | cheerful]
[music |Walking on Sunshine]

So on Friday I did my first solo babysitting of my 2-year old nephew Gus at my non baby friendly apartment. This was a huge success. Not only did I not let him play with oven cleaner, I got him to stop crying and stay entertained! It started off with some sniveling that occurred when "momma" left then proceeded by some silent clinging as we toured my apartment, outside, and briefly Mike's apt. (didn't want to traumatize the kid!). Then, as Uncle Wes frantically tried to finish up some work stuff, Nephew Gus did the oddest and most humorous thing I've seen in a while:
As he was playing with a flashlight, some business cards, and a paperclip, Gus discovers a full, unopened 15 piece pack of gum on an end table. Anyone who knows me, knows that I value gum like a junkie values drugs. I LOVE GUM! So this little punk decides that he's going to play with my fresh, untainted pack of oral fixation. As Gus starts ripping the package apart, my first instinct was to hop up from my chair and take it away from him, because it's MY gum, not his!! However, the human side of me realized that this was a $1 pack of gum that will give this kid 45 minutes of entertainment. So I let him proceed. He starts on this methodical, careful process of taking apart every piece of gum one by one. First he takes off the white paper wrapper off of each piece and then lines up the gum side by side on the floor. Then he takes a piece, unwraps the foil and vertically stacks the gum on the floor in piles of 4 or so. Every few minutes, he would snap out of it, grab a few pieces and extend them up towards me with an expecting look on his face. Gus does this until every piece is unwrapped, I have the gum, and there is a war-zone of gum pack debris on the floor. He stands up looks around and then promptly starts trying to play with a box-cutter that I have. As I quickly take away the knife, I start cracking up. He had just spent 45 minutes concentrating on this gum and then 2 seconds later he's like "ok, now what can I destroy!". Needless to say I was the one entertained.

After the "gum episode", he was getting antsy so I threw in Finding Nemo and we sat on my lazy-boy and watched that for 2 hours. "FISHIES!". Kids are pretty cool when you can rent them for a couple of hours!

I hate stress! [Aug. 29th, 2006|12:34 pm]
[Current Location |Mike's palace of intenet love]
[mood | stressed]
[music |Stressful on Sunshine]

So I thought i planned my life so that I had no stress. However, stress finds you no matter how hard you prepare and how hard you try to shut it out. I have 7 people to move in the next few weeks including a few on Friday and NONE are ready. We've had 2 months to prepare but I haven't been able to get decisions and planning out of my boss. SOOOO Frustrating! Normally, it wouldn't matter if the work got done late, but we're talking about people's homes here. I'm going to have to look at someone's face when they move into an unfinished place. The lack of trust and dissappointment in me is very hard to take. A lot of things in my job I don't care about but when it involves the lively hood of real people, then it becomes really stressful for me.

I'm such a damn liberal!

A great day for the Wesman! [Jun. 26th, 2006|03:17 pm]
[Current Location |Mike's apartment (no, there's no porno going on!)]
[mood | cheerful]
[music |Walking on Sunshine!]

Ok, so last week was rather annoying for me. On Saturday I lost my debit card and then this Friday I lost my cell phone. FUCK, WHY CAN'T I HOLD ON TO ANYTHING?! However, everything comes around. I got my new debit card today in the mail and while changing a light bulb, one of my tenants says in broken English "did you lose a cell phone?" I literally hugged the man! Then I apologized for making him listen to the "Final Countdown" over and over again. Apparently it fell out of my pocket on the street.

Then, to top off a great day, my Peace Corps recruiter called to tell me that I have been officially nominated for duty in the Peace Corps! However, the broad assignment I've been nominated for (HIV/AIDS Prevention/Education in East to South Africa)doesn't start till May '07. THis is a little far in the future for me, but that job and area is exactly where and what I want to do. It will be a "high mortality and grief job in a rural area." This is the possibly the toughest assignment in the Peace Corps and she said I was "extremely qualified" to handle it. I know she's right... She also said that if I get medical clearance soon and am ready to go, the placement office maybe offer me a job that leaves sooner than May. I don't have to settle because if I turn down an earlier assignment, I'm still nominated for the May Africa one. So, yeah, I'm happy to be progressing in my dream...

What a good day! Oh, and nobody die soon, because that would just suck!

Go Mom! [Mar. 31st, 2006|04:30 pm]
[Current Location |Mike's Apartement....again]
[mood | jubilant]
[music |Walking on Sunshine]

So today was my Mom's last of work FOREVER! Her office (and sometimes my office since we work for the same company) threw a party for her that was very nice. Everyone in the office had great things to say about her and she got a lot of gifts. Even one of her douchebag bosses Rob had some "nice" things to say. Yeah, they were slightly backhanded, but I think he was trying to be sincere. Plus, he sucks and my Mom rules, so in the long run, she wins. It was surreal to see my Mom in this sort of environment and it made me proud to see that she got so much respect. She worked her ass off for years and got very little appreciation along the way. Yeah, I got a little teary-eyed....

I'm very happy to see that she can finally stop working and do whatever she wants for the rest of her life. She was like a rock-star/stand-up comedian at the party. It's a roll that I don't get to see that often out of her because of the environment that I'm used to seeing her. She was really funny...I mean REALLY FUNNY (and I know funny!)! So here's a big CHEERS to my mom whom I love and am very proud of!!

Haha, dirty riff-raff [Mar. 30th, 2006|04:38 pm]
[Current Location |Mike's Apartment]
[mood | jubilant]
[music |Walking on Sunshine]

So last night I ran into a skateboarder! Or more precise, he ran into me.

I was driving across Pine street over by Ian's last night looking for a parking spot. There were no cars so I started to cross. when I reached the half-way point, Mike or someone was like "watch out for that skateboarder!". I hadn't seen the guy at all. He was flying down the hill going like 20 mph and had no way to stop. So he sees me and tries to go behind me. But I stop when I see him, so his path heads right for my car. He jumps off the board, stumbles and then slams against my trunk. He then drops back and starts screaming "WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK!!!" over and over again. So I casually drive a way and find a parking spot. The End....

GIVE ME SOMETHING TO BREAK! [Feb. 27th, 2006|02:15 pm]
[mood | mischievous]
[music |Destructing on Sunshine]

So yesterday, Bain and I got to tear down an old shed in my parent's backyard and yep, you guessed it...IT KICKED ASS!!! Breaking stuff is awesome when there are no consequences. It rarely happens so it's something you have to cherish. I got to smash walls down from the inside and then we pull on the supports till the whole thing collapsed. I have to say, that no matter how pathetic it sounds, I wouldn't have given up that opportunity for anything else...even carnal pursuits of the flesh...seriously...

Final Destination 2 [Feb. 8th, 2006|12:33 pm]
[mood | indescribable]
[music |Surviving on Sunshine]

Ok, so whether everyone is aware or not, there is a movie called "Final Destination 3" coming out. On seeing the commercials, I mocked that they are coming out with yet "ANOTHER" Final Destination movie. It's the same judgement I gave when I saw a commercial for "Anacondas" or "Big Momma's House 2". How can they make another crappy movie?! My judgement of FD3 was the same until last night when I watched FD2 all the way through. I have to admit that while it's not Oscar worthy and there are some unrealistic cheesy stuff that goes on, I really enjoyed it, especially the premise.

The premise, for anyone who doesn't know, is that a woman driving with her friends has a premonition that there is going to be a major pileup on the freeway and all the people in the cars behind her are going to die. The pileup is caused when a logging truck spills it's logs on the freeway. Well, the girl is obviously freaked so she stops her car on the onramp, thus stopping all the people behind her from getting on. Well just as a cop (who was one of the cars behind her) trys to calm her down, the logging truck rolls by and a pileup ensues, killing a bunch of other people. So the premise for the rest of the movie is that since all those people cheated death, then death is going to try to catch up to them. They were supposed to die and they didn't. So one by one, the survivors die by freak accidents.

What I like about this is that it made me really think about all the times that I've almost died. I'm sure other people have had closer calls, but I can remember a few events like they happened yesterday. Like the time I was six and got swept out into the ocean towards a rock jetty and was rescued by a lifeguard just 15 feet away from the rocks; Or when I was working for the Renton Parks Dept. in High School and I drove the parks truck across the train tracks just seconds before the train barrelled by; Or only a few months ago when I was picking up a patient at the Lifelong AIDS Alliance between Madison and Pike right by 12th and I almost got sideswipped. It was at a unmarked intersection where both ways thought they had the intersection. Well just as I was rolling through this girl came from the intersection right in front of me and almost sideswipped me. I'll never forget the terrified look in her eyes when we were about to hit.

The thing about these situations is that if just one little variable was changed, I would have died or been seriously hurt. Anyone else almost die before?? Let's here it...
